Motion: Joan Pereira on securing Singapore’s food future

Singapore needs to strengthen its food resilience, reduce food waste and mobilise all of society to keep food affordable, said MP Joan Pereira. Food resilience is tested most directly at hawker stalls and on the dining table of households, she said in parliament on Wednesday (Sep 9). She noted that government support for hawkers is real but pointed out that there is no consistent mechanism which ensures that the support reliably translates into lower prices for residents. She urged the government to take immediate steps to build multi-tenanted facilities for agri-food production and ensure that subsidies are in place to keep rent manageable as they grow. It should also start a national platform to aggregate the demand by hawkers and market food stallholders in bulk ordering.
