Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 2: Foo Cexiang on building domestic support for foreign policy

02:53 Min

Singaporeans have their own views on foreign policy, which can become a lightning rod for emotions - and the government needs to have its pulse on the ground. This does not mean holding public referendums or taking strategic decisions based on public sentiment. However, greater public support must be built for foreign policy. MP Foo Cexiang made these points in parliament on Friday (Feb 27). He gave four suggestions - anchor foreign policy in shared national principles; be more transparent in explaining key decisions; invest in education and strategic literacy; and ensure calm, consistent leadership to set the tone for national discourse.
