Yeo Wan Ling on Law Enforcement and Other Matters Bill
In Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 2), MP Yeo Wan Ling cited a case of an undiagnosed special needs adult in her constituency who was arrested after a commotion over a failed fast food delivery. She said she discovered that the police are trained to recognise, manage and diffuse such situations and called for such training to be made mandatory for all enforcers, including full-time NSmen. She added that when such incidents occur, the public often does not react kindly. She said if more people had a basic understanding of how to help someone having a “meltdown”, the police might not even have to be involved in the first place. Ms Yeo said a proposed change to lower the threshold for police officers to handle mental health-related incidents is clearly not meant to vest more power for them to make arrests but on the contrary, sets clear limits to their power.
