Yip Hon Weng on achievements of Team Singapore Olympians and Paralympians
Support for Singapore athletes has grown over the years, said MP Yip Hon Weng - ranging from the sports excellence (Spex) scheme to the establishment of the Sports School and now, plans to create a new home for Team Singapore at Kallang, announced at the Prime Minister’s National Day Rally. Mr Yip said athletes also need support to transition to post-sport careers. He called for a dedicated space where they can connect, share experiences and contribute their insights to shape future sporting policies. He also said training facilities must be made more accessible for para-athletes, giving them the space to “rise above unique challenges and perform at their best”. Mr Yip said the Government does have to be strategic with its investments, prioritising support for athletes and sports that “deliver the greatest return for Singapore, whether that is through national unity or international acclaim”. He spoke in Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 16).
