Yip Hon Weng on supporting Singaporeans in starting and raising families
Families are the foundation of the nation and when families succeed, Singapore succeeds, said MP Yip Hon Weng in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 5). He said for too many young Singaporeans, the dream of home ownership is slipping out of reach. He suggested indexing housing grants to HDB resale prices, doing even more to shorten Build-to-Order waiting times and exploring co-living spaces for young families as well as multi-generational housing models. To create better work-life balance, Mr Yip called for more family-friendly workplace policies like staggered hours or even a four-day work week, along with more subsidised family-oriented activities and events. Finally, he said the “village of support” needed to raise a child must be rebuilt, such as by enhancing training for caregivers including grandparents and expanding respite care initiatives.
