As temperatures soar in Singapore, many of us are thankful for the air-conditioning systems that keep us cool. We owe this comfort to American engineer Willis Carrier, who invented modern air-conditioning in 1902 and founded the Carrier Corporation in 1915.

Today, Carrier is a global leader of intelligent climate and energy solutions. Known for its expertise in integrating energy-efficient products, building controls and energy services across sectors, Carrier recognises its crucial role in addressing global environmental challenges. Sustainability is at Carrier’s core, as it continues to drive decarbonisation.

“We are targeting net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across our value chain by 2050, complementing our existing goal of helping customers reduce their GHG emissions by more than 1 gigatonne (roughly the mass of 200 million elephants) by 2030,” said Mr Chong Wai Yen, managing director of Carrier Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei.

CHARTING THE COURSE FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Carrier’s approach to sustainability includes offering innovative products and solutions to help customers reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and achieve their sustainability goals.

A notable product in its line-up is the AquaEdge Water-Cooled Centrifugal Chiller 19DV. Since its launch in 2016, the 19DV has been embraced by green developments and won several awards. These include the SEC-Senoko Energy Green Innovation Award by the Singapore Environment Council at the Singapore Environmental Achievement Awards 2018 and the Green Product of the Year in the Energy Management category at the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Green Building Awards.

“The 19DV showcases advancements in green technology for the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) industry because of its industry-leading energy efficiency,” said Mr Chong. “It uses a refrigerant with very low global warming potential. Each 19DV chiller installed in Singapore provides 1,213 metric tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) savings over its lifetime, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the building sector.”

On the digital front, Carrier provides solutions like BluEdge, a comprehensive aftermarket programme that covers monitoring, maintenance and remote implementation for clients. Another key service is Abound, which uses advanced technologies to gather, analyse and visualise data. This enables real-time, intelligent outcomes, making buildings more efficient and responsive, and giving occupants confidence in the health and safety of their indoor environments.

Furthermore, Carrier’s 2030 ESG goals focus on promoting sustainable solutions and operations through a responsible supply chain programme and rigorous assessment of key factory suppliers. The company is also committed to creating an inclusive and diverse workforce, aiming for gender parity in senior leadership and prioritising employee engagement.

PAVING THE WAY IN SINGAPORE

Carrier actively drives conversations to foster sustainable building practices in Singapore. In line with this vision, the company has moved its office into Perennial Business City – Singapore’s first sustainable super-low-energy business park in Jurong Lake District. “By relocating, we are not only adopting sustainable practices ourselves, but also setting a benchmark for others in the industry,” said Mr Chong.

Beyond building sustainability, Carrier is committed to enhancing urban greenery as part of Singapore’s broader Green Plan 2030. In collaboration with National Parks Board, the company has joined the OneMillionTrees Movement, pledging to plant one tree for every 19DV installed in Singapore.

“As a leader in green building solutions, we aim to advance sustainability not just through our technology, but also through community initiatives,” said Mr Chong. “We believe that small actions can accumulate to create a meaningful difference over time.”

EMPOWERING CHANGE TOGETHER

Carrier believes that everyone can take proactive steps to contribute to a greener Singapore.

Simple actions, like regularly servicing air-conditioning systems to ensure operational efficiency or setting thermostats to the optimal 24-26 degrees Celsius, can have a significant impact. When making purchasing decisions, choose energy-efficient models with a five-tick energy rating to maximise savings while minimising energy consumption.

“We all have a part to play in helping Singapore stabilise emissions and reduce emission intensity,” said Mr Chong. “Generating power more efficiently will lower energy costs, bring long-term economic benefits and contribute to a cleaner environment.”
