Get your green on: Go Green SG 2024 promises eco-friendly fun for all
In support of the Year of Public Hygiene, discover fun-filled activities in this year’s event line-up, including community clean-ups, sustainability tours and farmer’s markets.
Looking to make a positive environmental impact while having fun? Go Green SG, back for its second edition, might just be what you’re looking for.
Spearheaded by the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment (MSE), Go Green SG is a nationwide movement that rallies individuals, businesses and the community to take action for a more sustainable and climate-resilient Singapore. Running from now till Jul 14, this year’s Go Green SG features a broader range of activities, programmes and experiences organised by MSE’s 3P (people, public and private) sector partners. In support of the Year of Public Hygiene, Go Green SG also includes public hygiene-themed activities to promote a cleaner Singapore.
With more than 360 activities organised by some 180 partners – including workshops, learning journeys and exclusive tours to sites not typically open to the public – you’ll want to clear your schedule for these fun and unique adventures.
GO EXPLORE: DISCOVER NATURE AND INNOVATION
For the curious and adventurous, this year’s Go Green SG offers a plethora of exploratory experiences.
Kick off your weekends with one of six nature and sustainability tours at Gardens by the Bay, available on weekend mornings throughout June and July. Whether you’re fascinated by sustainable design principles or eager to explore the rich biodiversity of the gardens, these tours blend education and leisure – ideal for dates or group outings amid the garden’s natural beauty.
For architecture fans, mark your calendar for Jul 6 to visit CleanTech Park in Jurong Town Corporation’s (JTC) next-generation industrial estate, Jurong Innovation District, and learn about JTC’s sustainability-focused estate and building designs. Join anchor tenant Surbana Jurong for a tour of its new global headquarters SJ Campus – a “campus in nature” designed by award-winning architect Moshe Safdie.
GO PLAY: FAMILY-FRIENDLY GREEN ACTIVITIES
This year, Go Green SG coincides with the school holidays to ramp up the fun for families, making environmental learning enjoyable for all ages.
For fans of disaster fiction, Survive the Collapse by OCERA Games offers an interactive experience set in a reimagined post-apocalyptic Singapore. On Jun 15, step into the year 2060, team up to hunt for precious resources and connect with the last remaining suppliers in the city.
Alternatively, join the Mandai Wildlife Group on Jun 15 and 23 for a hands-on upcycling workshop at the Singapore Zoo. Create enrichment items for animals using recycled materials and discover how you can reduce waste while supporting animal welfare – a perfect family excursion combining creativity with eco-mindedness.
While there, don’t miss the Nature’s Recyclers tour to learn how even the smallest creatures can play a crucial role in contributing to the zoo’s sustainability efforts.
GO MAKAN: SUSTAINABLE FOOD EXPERIENCES
Foodies, rejoice – you can have your cake and eat it (sustainably), too.
Stop by the Kranji Countryside Association Farmers’ Market on Jun 22 and 23 to check out locally grown produce and learn about sustainable living and local agriculture. Farm tours and educational workshops on waste upcycling and aquaponics will also be available on both days.
Also, check out the Sustainably Yours hotel tour at Parkroyal Collection Marina Bay, Singapore’s “garden-in-a-hotel”, happening every Friday at 3pm from Jun 21 to Jul 12. Explore the hotel’s rooftop urban farm – which forms the backbone of its farm-to-table and farm-to-bar concepts.
GO CLEAN: CHANNEL YOUR KAMPONG SPIRIT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
Support the Year of Public Hygiene by joining community clean-up activities to keep our shared spaces clean.
Eco-enthusiasts can participate in the Eco Paddle event with Ola Beach Club, where you’ll kayak and pick up marine litter along Singapore’s coasts, including Sentosa and nearby islands. Held on the mornings of Jun 14, Jun 23 and Jul 14, it offers a chance to learn about Singapore’s marine biodiversity and how you can do your part to maintain cleaner waters.
Similarly, Nature Society Singapore is organising a mangrove clean-up on the morning of Jun 29 at Sungei Pang Sua, an important bird and biodiversity area. Help maintain the health of this waterway while collecting data for Nature Society Singapore’s monitoring programme, which tracks litter trends and composition on the mudflats.
GO SHOP: BE A CONSCIOUS CONSUMER
Singaporeans love to shop, and now you can do so in a sustainable fashion.
Head to Green Fest at Nee Soon Link, a vibrant community event promoting sustainable practices through workshops, exhibits and interactive activities. A highlight is the Zero Market, where you can purchase sustainable products ranging from organic food to handmade items.
Also worth noting is ION Orchard’s initiative to promote sustainable takeaway practices. From now till Sep 30, shoppers can borrow a free reusable cup or container for their takeaways from participating stores such as Toast Box, Starbucks and Food Opera. After your meal, simply return the container within 30 days to get it professionally cleaned. This helps reduce your carbon footprint, making sustainability simple and achievable.
