With hybrid work models becoming the norm, many working professionals now consider monitors and personal computer (PC) peripherals to be essential components of their home office set-ups.

An ergonomically designed monitor with a high resolution not only minimises the physical strain of extended desk-bound hours, but also facilitates easy transitions between detail-oriented tasks and improves productivity. Complementary PC peripherals such as keyboards, mice, webcams and headsets further enhance the hybrid work experience, boosting efficiency along the way.

Dell Technologies has been at the forefront of technology innovation for the last four decades. This year marks 10 consecutive years that Dell has been the No 1 monitor company worldwide, according to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly PC Monitor Tracker.

Dell’s success in this domain can be attributed to its commitment to customer satisfaction, advanced research and development capabilities, as well as a robust supply chain. The company also leverages the “Singapore advantage”, harnessing the city-state’s technological prowess to design and develop its displays and PC peripherals.

At the Dell Singapore Design Centre, situated at The Strategy at Jurong, a culture of innovation attracts a broad range of talent from across the globe and fosters an environment conducive to design thinking.

“Dell benefits from Singapore’s multicultural environment – the diverse perspectives enable us to design products catering to global needs,” said Mr Jason Goh, design director of the Experience Design Group at Dell Technologies. “We are also able to leverage a supportive ecosystem that allows us to push the boundaries of what’s possible.”

AN EXPERIENCE-FIRST APPROACH TO DESIGN

For Mr Goh, designing each Dell product involves a holistic approach that prioritises not only aesthetics but the entire user experience. “We consider every aspect, from purchasing to unboxing, all the way to usage,” he said.

Mr Goh leads a design team that includes industrial designers, user experience designers, user interface designers, colour material finishing designers, 3D animators and computer technologists. The Dell Singapore Design Centre is equipped with a user experience research lab and prototype development facilities like 3D printing, enabling the company to garner immediate end-user feedback and make design reiterations quickly. It also boasts a dedicated colour and materials finishing lab where designers generate the innovative ideas that keep Dell ahead of industry trends.

Before their global debut, Dell’s products undergo rigorous testing to ensure they meet exacting standards. Some products can take 12 to 24 months to develop, undergoing multiple reiterations of testing.

For instance, the new Alienware 32 4K QD-OLED Monitor was created from scratch based on feedback from the gaming community. Following this, Dell conducted several months of stringent testing to ensure it adheres to internal durability and quality standards.

Dell works with Team Liquid, a professional e-sports team, to test Alienware products, which are further refined based on user feedback. “This collaboration allows us to drive enhancements in areas of product design and development that truly add value,” said Ms Yoon Lee, vice president of Displays at Dell Technologies.

BRINGING INNOVATIVE CONCEPTS TO LIFE

Every Dell product is thoughtfully designed to meet specific user needs. “Gamers, for instance, particularly value tactile feedback in their mouse and keyboard,” shared Mr Goh. “Such features need to be robust because of the intense nature of gaming.”

For products used in professional work settings, Dell focuses on four key areas: Collaboration, productivity, well-being and sustainability. “The pandemic shifted our perspectives dramatically,” said Ms Lee. “People who work from home are expected to be just as productive, so we had to find ways to enhance our products for hybrid working. For instance, we have integrated conferencing capabilities into our monitors, incorporating built-in mics, speakers and cameras for unified communication.”

Dell’s latest commercial monitors tout reduced blue light-emissions, auto ambient light sensors and higher refresh rates to alleviate flicker and prevent eye strain. “These features were developed in response to widespread complaints of eye fatigue among our colleagues during the pandemic due to unprecedented screen time,” said Ms Lee.

These improvements have led to Dell becoming the first organisation to receive the TÜV Rheinland five-star eye comfort certification, underscoring its commitment to user well-being.

This dedication to excellence is further reflected in Dell’s displays and PC peripherals, which have earned numerous global awards and accolades like the IF Gold Award and CES Innovation Awards

Looking ahead, Dell aims to deepen its commitment to sustainability and enhancing user experiences through innovative products. “We will continue doing what we do best, which is leading with innovation and putting our customers front and centre,” said Ms Lee.
