3 men face charges for incidents on e-scooters, bicycle

SINGAPORE — Three men will be hauled to court on Wednesday (May 24) for acting rashly or negligently when riding an electric scooter or a bicycle, the police said in a news release.
Among the trio, teenager Ho Jun Wei, who allegedly hit a 78-year-old man riding an electric scooter on Feb 17, faces the most serious charge.
The 17-year-old will be charged with causing grievous hurt to the elderly man with a rash act on a pavement along Yishun Ring Road, which carries a penalty of up to four years in jail and/or a fine of up to S$10,000.
Another case involves Sathappan Anbarasan, 33, who hit a 73-year-old woman while riding his bicycle on the footpath at Simei Street on Sept 21 last year.
He will be charged for causing grievous hurt with a negligent act, which carries a maximum punishment of two years’ jail and S$5,000 fine.
Both victims in these separate incidents were taken to the hospital after getting hit.
The third man, Chew Hup Seng, 37, allegedly hit a 48-year-old man with his electric scooter during a dispute at Keat Hong Community Centre on July 24 last year. He will be charged with rash act causing hurt.
If convicted, Chew may be jailed for up to six months, and/or fined with up to S$2,500 for committing the rash act.
The police said Chew will also face a charge of intentionally causing harassment, which might put him in jail for another six months.
In their news release on Wednesday, the police said they “take a serious view of persons who commit dangerous acts that endanger the lives or safety of others, and will not hesitate to take action against these perpetrators”.
