SINGAPORE — The Court has ruled that statements made by Dr Ting Choon Meng and published by alternative news website The Online Citizen are false, said the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) in a press release late last night (May 15).

Dr Ting had earlier alleged that MINDEF had stolen the idea for a mobile first-aid vehicle from start-up MobileStats Technologies, which he co-founded.

“MINDEF had earlier provided opportunities for these false allegations to be corrected, without success,” it said in the release.

Channel NewsAsia understands that MINDEF’s application for a Court Order under the Protection from Harassment Act was granted yesterday.

“As a Government organisation, MINDEF is held to a high standard of conduct. When false allegations that damage our integrity are made, they can dent public confidence in MINDEF and the Government. MINDEF hopes that all parties involved will respect and abide by the Court’s decision,” MINDEF added.

In a statement published on its website yesterday, The Online Citizen confirmed that the application by MINDEF under the Protection from Harassment Act against Dr Ting and The Online Citizen was successful.

“We are surprised and disappointed at the outcome of this case. We have taken this case on as a point of principle and fully intend to appeal the judgement, as this has serious implications on freedom of expression,” The Online Citizen said. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
