SINGAPORE — The number of Covid-19 patients who require oxygen to help them breathe and in the intensive care units (ICUs) fell slightly on Friday (Aug 6), while five new clusters were detected by the authorities.
In its nightly update on the coronavirus situation in Singapore, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said that there were 38 Covid-19 cases of serious illness requiring oxygen support, down from 40 on Thursday.
In addition, there are seven patients who are in critical condition under intensive care, down by one from a day ago.
Of the 45 patients in serious and critical condition, six are fully vaccinated, MOH said. Among these six, five require oxygen supplementation and one requires intensive care as they have underlying medical conditions.
“Thirty-five seniors above 60 years old, of whom 30 are completely unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, have fallen very ill,” it added.
Over the last 28 days, 85 local cases required oxygen support, were admitted to ICU or died.
Of these, 53 are not vaccinated, 24 are partially vaccinated and eight are fully vaccinated.
On Friday, MOH said that a 63-year-old Singaporean man died from complications due to Covid-19. He was the fourth such death this week.
There are 546 Covid-19 patients who are hospitalised.
NEW CLUSTERS
The five new clusters identified on Friday included Jem mall in Jurong East, Elsie’s Kitchen catering firm, Nimble/Knead spa and Chee Song Frozen Foods.
The fifth new cluster was linked to an individual identified only by a case number.
In total, there are now 126 active clusters, each having between three and 1,134 cases.
Earlier, MOH said that there were 93 new locally transmitted Covid-19 cases confirmed on Friday, including 29 that were not linked to earlier detected infections.
Of the 93 cases, 56 were linked to previous infections and had already been placed under quarantine.
Another eight infections, also linked to previous cases, were detected through surveillance testing.
Among the new cases was a senior aged above 70 who was partially vaccinated and at risk of serious illness.
Besides the locally transmitted cases, there were four imported cases, making a total of 97 new Covid-19 cases confirmed on Friday.
The imported cases had been isolated on arrival in Singapore. All were detected on arrival.
Overall, the number of new cases in the community has fallen from 878 in the week before to 671 in the past week.
The number of cases with no known links in the community has also dropped from 244 in the week before to 203 in the past week.
