SINGAPORE – The false ceiling of a walkway at the Singapore Management University (SMU) collapsed on Tuesday (Oct 24) late afternoon after it could not take the weight of water accumulated from a leaking drainage pipe.
The collapsed ceiling is situated at the underground concourse of the Victoria Street campus.
A university spokesperson told TODAY that the drainage pipe above the false ceiling had leaked and water had seeped through. The false celling could not take the weight of the accumulated water and gave way.
“Some of the water had entered a portion of the study area located next to the affected space,” she added.
No one was hurt.
The SMU spokesperson added that, following the collapse, the university’s ground team immediately cordoned off the area for safety reasons and cleared the water from the site.
“The university is investigating the incident and have ascertained that the structure of the surrounding area is not affected,” said the spokesperson.
“Measures to rectify the area will be taken as soon as the investigations have been completed”.
This is the second time in a little over two months that a false celling had collapsed at a university.
On Aug 21, part of a false ceiling in a lecture theatre at the Nanyang Technological University collapsed. No one was injured in the incident as there were no classes on during the incident.
