SINGAPORE — Commuters who live in the southern part of Singapore or frequently take buses out of Bukit Merah and Harbourfront bus interchanges will soon be able to get free Wi-Fi while on board 18 SBS Transit bus services.

From February next year, the free Wi-Fi services will be available on 300 buses, allowing commuters to check email or watch videos on their smart phones without eating into their mobile data charges.

SBS Transit said in a press release on Wednesday (Nov 14) that it will be rolling out other new innovative features such as interactive touchscreen panels and digital feedback panels at Bukit Merah and Harbourfront bus interchanges on Nov 18.

The interactive touchscreen panels will offer travel information such as bus services, bus departure times, bus routes and maps. They will also display up-to-date information such as service extension hours, and routes that are being diverted or delayed.

As for the feedback panels, they will be set up near the Passenger Service Office of the interchanges to allow commuters to give feedback on bus interchanges’ facilities such as toilet cleanliness and lighting. This will allow the operator “to take corrective action quickly”, SBS Transit said.

Apart from these, television screens put up at the two bus interchanges will display information on community events and activities to engage residents in the neighbourhood.

Other services for commuters include charging points for them to recharge their mobile devices, and umbrellas for those who are caught in the rain. The umbrellas are on loan for free for 24 hours, but users have to use a mobile application to get one and collect it at dispensers located near the Passenger Service Office of the two bus interchanges.

The company’s chief executive officer Gan Juay Kiat said: “As part of our continuous commitment to enhance commuters’ travelling experience, we are leveraging technology to boost our service quality as well as increase the accessibility and availability of information for commuters.

“We will continue to look for ways to make public transport travel a more commuter-friendly, convenient and seamless experience.”
