SINGAPORE: Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers can now be used at Giant and Ang Mo supermarkets, bringing the total number of supermarket chains accepting them to seven.

When the latest tranche of CDC vouchers was launched on Jan 3, it was announced that they would be accepted at NTUC FairPrice, Sheng Siong, Prime Supermarket, HAO Mart and U Stars Supermarket outlets.

“Together, these seven supermarket chains offer Singaporean households over 360 outlets islandwide to spend their CDC vouchers,” Minister of State for Trade and Industry Low Yen Ling said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Feb 1).

“This is in addition to the over 20,600 participating heartland hawkers and merchants on the scheme.”

The CDC vouchers cannot be used at the self-checkout counters at Giant supermarkets, the chain said in a Facebook post.

Among the S$300 CDC vouchers issued to each Singaporean household in the latest tranche, S$150 can be used at these supermarket outlets, while the other S$150 can be spent at participating hawkers and heartland merchants.

The latest CDC vouchers will expire on Dec 31.

More than 1.1 million Singaporean households, or about 90 per cent, have claimed their vouchers since they were launched, Ms Low added.

In less than a month, more than S$132 million of vouchers have been spent.

“Compared with the voucher tranches in 2021 and 2022, 15 per cent more Singaporean households have claimed their CDC vouchers within the first 30 days of the scheme’s launch," said Ms Low.

“We are glad with the speedy claim and spend this round as the higher quantum of CDC vouchers continues to spur activities and local businesses in our heartlands and also defray the household expenses for Singaporeans.”

CDC vouchers are part of measures from the Government to help Singaporeans cushion the effects of higher prices and the recent GST (Goods and Services Tax) rate increase, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said last month.

Other measures include cash payouts to adult Singaporeans in December and U-Save rebates to help offset utility bills.
