SINGAPORE — Tasked to come up with proposals to improve hawker centres and promote the trade, the Hawker Centre 3.0 committee has submitted its recommendations to the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources on Friday (Feb 3), after spending a year engaging more than 800 stakeholders, including hawkers, members of the public, and other industry players.

Here is a quick look at some of the key proposals.

 

1) Sustain hawker trade and support injection of new blood through:

• Practice-oriented training programmes to develop hawkers’ culinary and business management skills

• An incubation stall programme to give aspiring hawkers a chance to try their hand at running a stall for six to 12 months while being guided by mentors

• A one-stop information and resource centre to let potential hawkers find out about licence applications, tendering of stalls, among other things

• Promoting hawker and hawker trade

 

2) Boost hawkers’ productivity by:

• Centralising dishwashing services, offering cashless payment options and making bulk purchases of common ingredients

• Automating tedious and repetitive tasks, such as cutting, chopping and mixing of ingredients

 

3) Improve vibrancy of these spaces by:

• Holding regular music performances and festive celebrations in partnership with community groups

• Improving amenities such as through provision of free Wi-Fi and child-friendly spaces

• Actively managing the mix of hawker stalls to ensure a good variety of food being sold

 

4) Promote gracious behaviour by:

• Developing a tray-return culture and improving these facilities

• Encouraging considerate and gracious behaviour at hawker centres
