SINGAPORE: The likelihood of smoke haze affecting Singapore on Tuesday (Oct 27) is low, according to the National Environment Agency (NEA).

Prevailing winds are expected to blow from the northeast or southeast and showers are expected over Singapore and the vicinity, NEA said in its advisory.

"Under these conditions, the likelihood of smoke haze affecting Singapore is low."

For Wednesday and Thursday, winds are forecast to become variable, with showers expected over Singapore and the surrounding region. The wet conditions should help keep hotspot and smoke haze activity suppressed, NEA added.

The 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) forecast for Tuesday is between 60 to 90, within the good to moderate range.

Meanwhile, air quality continued to improve across Singapore on Monday, as the PSI readings remained in the good to moderate range overnight.

At 9pm, the 24-hour PSI readings ranged from 64 to 73, with the highest reading in the western region.

Hourly PM2.5 levels were also in the normal band, ranging from 10 to 50, with the highest reading in the western region.

On Sunday evening, NEA said the 24-hour PSI for Monday was expected to range from 70 to 100, within the good to moderate band.

NEA noted that some showers fell over parts of Singapore on Sunday, and added that smoke haze was observed over Kalimantan but it did not drift to Singapore.

The agency said on Monday morning that moderate transboundary smoke haze was observed over parts of northwestern Borneo, while moderate haze was seen in Central and East Kalimantan.

In the coming days, showers are forecast over Borneo, Sumatra, Java and Peninsular Malaysia. The regional haze situation may improve in areas experiencing rain, although smoke haze could remain elevated in places that stay dry, with a continued risk of transboundary haze.

NEA has advised the public to refer to the 24-hour PSI forecast when planning outdoor activities and to check the latest 1-hour PM2.5 readings before undertaking immediate outdoor activities.

Based on the 24-hour PSI forecast for Monday, all individuals can engage in outdoor activities as usual.

When hourly PM2.5 concentrations are in the elevated band, healthy individuals should reduce strenuous outdoor activities for the next hour.

Vulnerable groups, including children, elderly people, pregnant women and those with chronic heart or lung conditions, should avoid strenuous outdoor activities during that period.
