Kidnapping claims at VivoCity unfounded: Police

SINGAPORE — There was no attempted child kidnap case at VivoCity last Sunday contrary to widespread accounts on social media, the police said on Saturday (Aug 6).

Accounts of the attempted kidnap of a child at VivoCity’s Giant supermarket on July 31 began making its rounds on social media this week, and was reported by some Singapore news websites on Friday.

“The Police have thoroughly investigated into the case (and) have established that it was not a case of attempted kidnapping. There are also no other reports made to the Police of such kidnapping incidents in other parts of Singapore,” the police said in a statement.

It urged the public not spread unsubstantiated information which may cause alarm, adding: “The police takes a very stern view against anyone who spreads false information and will not hesitate to take action against such individuals.”
