SINGAPORE — A 23-year-old Malaysian man was charged on Wednesday (Dec 21) with the murder of a 54-year-old cleaner at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal last month.
Ahmad Muin Yaacob, a Malaysian, had allegedly killed Maimunah Awang between noon and 1pm at the ferry terminal on Nov 24. The victim’s body was found in a drain, with neck injuries and bruises on her stomach.
Her gold jewellery was also reportedly missing.
Maimunah was believed to be Ahmad Muin’s colleague in a cleaning company.
Dressed in a blue T-shirt and jeans, Ahmad Muin was expressionless when the charge was read to him in court. But he later asked the judge through a Malay interpreter: “Can I be saved from the death penalty if I cooperate with the authorities?”
He will be remanded for a week for further investigations and will return to court on Dec 28.
The police said on Tuesday that the accused was arrested in Malaysia on Sunday after a warrant of arrest was issued by the State Courts. He was handed over to the Singapore police the following evening.
If convicted of murder, Ahmad Muin faces the death penalty.
