SINGAPORE — A 59-year-old man charged with murdering his 61-year-old co-tenant at a rental flat in Redhill Close last month had his remand extended for three weeks for psychiatric evaluation.

The accused, Ng Boon Hong, appeared in court on Thursday (April 6) via video-link and spoke through a Chinese interpreter. He was not represented by a lawyer.

The court ordered his case to be further mentioned on April 27.

Ng allegedly caused the death of Ang Cheng Kek sometime between 11pm on March 15 and 2am on March 16 in a unit at Block 90 Redhill Close, according to court documents.

The documents did not state how the alleged murder was committed.

Ng was handed the murder charge on March 18. At that hearing, a district judge ordered him to be remanded for three weeks for psychiatric examination at Changi Prison Complex’s medical centre.

Ng had been arrested by the police a day earlier at the block of rental flats.

The police said in a statement on March 17 that they were alerted to the incident at 10.50am.

Upon arrival, police officers found Ang lying motionless with multiple wounds inside the flat.

The man was later pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

When TODAY visited the scene on March 17, bloodied shoe prints were seen along the corridor floor, stretching for almost 10m, but mostly right outside the fifth-storey flat where the body was found.

TODAY understands that there was a dispute between the two men.

If convicted of murder, Ng will face the death penalty.
