Man who wanted to 'open fire' on LGBT community apologises, takes down Facebook account

SINGAPORE – Facebook user Bryan Lim, who has several police reports lodged against him over his Facebook comment that he wanted to “open fire” on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, has apologised for his “strong words” and called it a misunderstanding.
“I did not mean physical bullets nor physical death. I mean open fire in debate and remove (Bloomberg and foreign intervention) from Singapore domestic matters,” he commented on Facebook on Monday (June 13).
He also said that his earlier comments posted on the Facebook page called We are against Pinkdot in Singapore (WAAPD) was “taken out of context”.
“I hope this clears the air,” he added.
His original comment was made on June 4 – the day of the annual Pink Dot event which supports the LGBT cause – in response to a Facebook post on the page expressing disapproval against multi-national corporations supporting the Pink Dot movement.
The comment read: “I am a Singaporean citizen. I am a NSman. I am a father. And I swore to protect my nation. Give me the permission to open fire. I would like to see these £@€$^*s die for their causes.”
Mr Lim’s Facebook account appears to have been taken down.
The page administrators behind WAAPD issued a statement on their page on Monday saying that they “do not condone the advocacy of violence” despite being clear of their position to reject the promotion of the homosexual lifestyle.
“We will delete any post that promote violence as they come to our attention,” the message read.
“We would also not hesitate to report such matters to the authorities and ban the member from the group if we believe a threat is real.”
The Police on Monday confirmed that investigations are ongoing following reports filed against Mr Lim over his earlier comments. In a Facebook post, the Police also clarified on Tuesday that Mr Lim is not a national serviceman for the Singapore Police Force.
