More thundery showers, warm days expected in second half of June

SINGAPORE — Wet weather conditions are expected to continue in the next two weeks, the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) said on Friday (June 14).

The weatherman is forecasting thundery showers — mostly in the late morning and early afternoon on four to six days.

The showers could also extend into the late afternoon and evening on some days.

On two to three other days, Sumatra squalls could bring "widespread thundery showers accompanied with the occasional gusty winds to the island between pre-dawn and morning", the service added.

This is because south-west monsoon conditions have set in over Singapore and the surrounding region, and will extend until October.

Monsoon rain is forecast to remain over the equatorial region before shifting northwards in the last week of June. The transition to dry and warm conditions is thus expected towards the end of June.

Even with the rain, MSS said that warm and humid days experienced in the last two weeks can be expected to persist into the early part of the coming fortnight.

The daily temperature could hit up to 35°C in the last week of the month, and range between 25°C and 33°C on most days.

Temperatures of up to 28°C can also be expected on some nights, particularly when prevailing winds blowing from the south-east bring in warm and humid air from the sea.

The rainfall for the month of June is likely to be “slightly above normal” for most parts of Singapore, with the highest daily rainfall recorded so far as 102.8mm at Bukit Merah on June 3.

The highest temperature recorded was 33.9°C at Chua Chu Kang and Pulau Ubin on June 11.
