SINGAPORE: It is misleading for a food court to claim it is halal-certified when only individual stalls are issued with halal-certificates.
Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim was responding to a question by Member of Parliament Zaqy Mohamad on MUIS's position on food courts marketing themselves as halal outlets.
Dr. Yaccob said MUIS is committed to ensuring the integrity of more than 2,700 halal certificates issued.
He shared that 7000 inspections were carried out last year and 21 halal certificate holders were found to be in breach.
Of these, 14 had their certificates suspended while seven were issued with a warning.
Dr Yaacob said: "We will continue to step up especially the unannounced inspections. This is depending upon the number of people we have on the ground. We have been working with some other partners to ensure that we can step up inspections across the board."
