SINGAPORE — You can now make payment via Nets when travelling overseas to countries such as Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and Thailand.

Under a partnership with Chinese financial services corporation UnionPay, the NetsPay mobile application is now accepted at more than 7.5 million UnionPay QR code merchants and close to 12 million UnionPay QuickPass contactless points worldwide.

Announcing the tie-up on Tuesday (Sept 11), Nets said this is the first time its services will be available outside Singapore, under a new mobile wallet feature in its enhanced app.

Besides overseas payment, new features added to the NetsPay app include funds transfer to and from other NetsPay users through mobile numbers or QR code, and e-hongbaos (electronic red packets) for people to send money as gifts.

PART OF SINGAPORE'S CASHLESS DRIVE

The latest enhancements by Nets come amid a push for Singapore to go cashless, as well as the regional alliances among payment providers.

In March, telecommunications firm Singtel announced its intentions to connect its Dash mobile wallet with its regional affiliates, starting with Thai mobile operator AIS from the middle of this year. The plan will link more than 50 million registered wallet users with more than a million merchant points across Asia.

Singtel later teamed up with Singapore gaming firm Razer in May to create what it hopes will become the largest e-payment network in the region.

Early this year, ride-hailing service Grab's e-payment platform GrabPay also rolled out an e-hongbao feature, which was popularised by DBS Bank's PayLah! App, before announcing a joint venture in May called Grab Financial Services Asia with Japanese credit card company Credit Saison to offer loans and other financial products and services.
