SINGAPORE — Blogger Roy Ngerng has applied to join the Reform Party (RP) and is likely to be fielded in the coming General Election if he is accepted as a member, said RP secretary-general Kenneth Jeyaretnam yesterday.
Mr Ngerng, who accompanied Mr Jeyaretnam and party volunteers at a walkabout in Telok Blangah Drive yesterday, said he had been in touch with the RP since late last year and expressed interest to be a member “a few months ago”.
He first appeared on RP’s Facebook page last Saturday, where he was pictured with Mr Jeyaretnam and party chairman Andy Zhu.
While he said he has not set his eye on a specific constituency, Mr Ngerng noted that he “grew up in Ang Mo Kio”.
Should he be fielded in the Group Representation Constituency (GRC), Mr Ngerng, 34, said he “does not see any issue” about being pitted against Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, whom he has been found by the High Court to have defamed. The court has yet to rule on the damages he has to pay Mr Lee.
Thus far, RP is the only opposition party to have expressed interest in contesting Ang Mo Kio GRC.
Mr Ngerng said he has not participated in any of RP’s walkabouts in Ang Mo Kio, but has previously volunteered with the Singapore People’s Party and the Singapore Democratic Party.
Speaking to reporters before the walkabout yesterday, Mr Jeyaretnam said the party has finalised most of its candidates. “We have only one or two slots left to fill, but we are keeping our cards close to our chest,” he said.
