SINGAPORE – The People’s Action Party’s (PAP) Lim Biow Chuan will be defending his seat in the single-member constituency Mountbatten at the coming General Election.

During a press conference held today (Aug 21) at the food centre at Block 51, Old Airport Road, Mr Lim was introduced by Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development.

Said Mr Tan: "We're very happy to field him again in the coming elections. Mr Lim doesn't just work at the ground level, but tries to translate them into the national level...He is very dogged in the things he believes in."

Mr Lim said: "We have been on the ground all the time.... I want to thank the Mountbatten residents for welcoming me into their close circle of friendship."

If Mr Lim is re-elected, he hopes to champion issues like character development in schools, a less intensive curriculum, better public transport, estate development, and influencing policies for a "kinder and more compassionate society".

He said: "The soul of a nation cannot just be measured by success, but what kind of Singaporeans we are."

The ward was formerly part of Marine Parade GRC but was hived off in the 2011 General Election, where Ms Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss challenged under the National Solidarity Party banner. The lawyer, who has joined the Singapore People's Pary, wants to challenge Mr Lim, also a lawyer, again at the coming polls.

When asked about the contest with Ms Chong-Aruldoss, Mr Lim said: "I welcome the competition, it keeps everyone on the ball. Having worked on the ground, it gives residents the opportunity to put out a report card."

He added that he had worked very hard, coming down four to five times a week, and ultimately it is up for the residents to decide.

Ms Chong-Aruldoss had said earlier this month that she will be contesting in the SMC. She had also contested in Mountbatten in the 2011 General Election but had lost to Mr Lim.
