Safe distancing ambassador at Westgate mall among 4 unlinked community cases; 30 others linked to past infections

  • There were 38 Covid-19 cases reported on May 19
  • Of these, 34 were in the community, four of which were unlinked
  • New cases were added to clusters at Learning Point tuition centre, Changi Airport and Changi Prison Complex clusters
  • There were four imported cases and none in foreign worker dormitories
  • 49 more cases have been discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities

 

SINGAPORE — A safe distancing ambassador who was deployed at Westgate mall in Jurong East as well as a basic care assistant at Alexandra Hospital were among four new Covid-19 community cases on Wednesday (May 19) that have not been traced to any source of infection.

The four were part of 34 cases in the community, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said.

Another four cases were imported, bringing the total number of cases on Wednesday to 38.

The Changi Airport cluster saw seven new additions, bringing the total number of infections there to 95.

The Learning Point tuition centre cluster had three new cases to make it 27 in all.

The Changi Prison Complex cluster also saw three new additions. This cluster now has seven cases.

There were no new cases in the foreign worker dormitories, the ministry added.

The four community cases with no known sources of infection were:

  • A 45-year-old Singaporean man who is a safe distancing ambassador deployed at Westgate. The man developed symptoms on May 15 but did not see a doctor until May 18

  • A 24-year-old Singaporean woman who works as a basic care assistant at Alexandra Hospital. She developed a cough on May 17 and went for a rostered routine testing of workers that same day

  • A 45-year-old Singaporean man who is a delivery worker at Fairfield Book Publishers

  • A 28-year-old Singaporean man who works as an engineer for engineering solutions provider Patec 

CHANGI AIRPORT CLUSTER

Seven more cases were linked to an 88-year-old Singaporean man who is employed by Ramky Cleantech Services as a cleaner at Changi Airport Terminal 3. He was confirmed to have Covid-19 on May 5.

All of them were already quarantined, MOH said.

This brings the number of cases there to 95 — the largest community cluster in Singapore so far.

The seven cases were:

  • A 31-year-old Filipina who works part-time as a serving staff member at Nana’s Green Tea cafe at Duo Galleria mall near Beach Road

  • A 33-year-old China national who is an inspection officer at manufacturing plant AFPD. He last went to work on May 8

  • A 12 year-old Singaporean girl who is a student at White Sands Primary School. She last went to school on May 12

  • A 46-year-old Singaporean man who works as a swimming coach

  • An 11-year-old Singaporean boy who is a student at St Stephen’s School. He last went to school on May 12

  • A 12-year-old Singaporean girl who is a student at St Anthony Canossian Primary School. She last went to school on May 11

  • A 62-year-old Singaporean man who works at as an attendant at Terminal 3

LEARNING POINT CLUSTER

Three more cases were linked to a 50-year-old Singaporean female tutor at Learning Point in Parkway Centre. 

  • A 39-year-old male permanent resident who is self-employed

  • A six-year-old male permanent resident who is a student at Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Kindergarten. He last went to school on May 12

  • A 69-year-old Singaporean woman who is a retiree

CHANGI PRISON COMPLEX CLUSTER

Three more cases were linked to the Changi Prison Complex cluster. The first case detected there was a China national who works as a cook employed by Sats Food Services.

The newly infected are all inmates at the prison, Singaporean men aged 28, 46 and 56.

The Singapore Prison Service (SPS) said that all three inmates had worked at the prison kitchen located at Institution A5 of the Changi Prison Complex.

All other inmates and staff members from Institution A5 have since tested negative for their second polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, SPS said.

“Inmates and staff from Institution A5 will undergo repeated PCR testing in the coming days for early detection of any possible incubating cases.

“There is currently no indication that the virus has spread beyond the prison kitchen at Institution A5 where (the initial case) and the affected inmates were working. SPS has conducted PCR tests on about 5,000 inmates, staff and vendors from Cluster A. These tests have returned negative,” it added.

JIN TAI TONG FOOD INDUSTRIES CLUSTER

Two new cases were linked to a 55-year-old Singaporean man who works as a warehouse assistant at Jin Tai Mart.

  • A 26-year-old Vietnamese man who works as a warehouse assistant at Jin Tai Tong Chinese Medical Centre

  • A 39-year-old male China national who works as a warehouse assistant at Jin Tai Tong Food Industries

MARINA BAY SANDS CASINO CLUSTER

There was one case linked to a dealer who works in the casino at Marina Bay Sands. She is a 32-year-old Malaysian woman who also works as a dealer at the casino.

SMS INFOCOMM CLUSTER

Another new case was linked to the Sms Infocomm cluster — a 29-year-old Malaysian woman who also works there.

OTHER CASES LINKED TO PAST INFECTIONS

There were also cases that have since been linked to past infections.

  • A 39-year-old Filipina who is a foreign domestic worker and is linked to a cluster involving a personal chauffeur

  • A 36-year-old female permanent resident who is a preschool teacher at Safari House (Lakeside) and is linked to a cluster involving a 64-year-old unemployed woman

  • A 65-year-old Singaporean man who works at SP Trading and a 64-year-old Singaporean homemaker who is linked to a cluster that originated from a web designer

  • A 44-year-old Filipina who is a foreign domestic worker, a 15-year-old Singaporean boy who is a student at Yu Ying Secondary School, and a 48-year-old Singaporean man who works as a logistics officer at Ceva Logistics. The three are linked to a cluster involving a 77-year-old Singaporean homemaker who was infected on May 15

  • A 48-year-old Singaporean man who works as a personal chauffeur and is linked to the cluster involving a woman who works at events firm Invade Industry

  • A 39-year-old Singaporean man who is a pastor at Hearts Alive Church

  • A 32-year-old Singaporean man who works as a software engineer at financial tech firm M-DAQ

  • A 53-year-old Singaporean woman who is a homemaker

  • A 33-year-old Singaporean woman who works as a preschool teacher at My First Skool located at Block 235 Bukit Panjang

  • A 34-year-old Malaysian woman who works as a flight stewardess at Jetstar Asia Airways

IMPORTED CASES

The four new imported cases were all placed on stay-home notice upon their arrival here, MOH said.

  • One Singaporean and two permanent residents who returned from India, Indonesia and the United States

  • A short-term visit pass holder who came from Japan for a work project here

UPDATE ON REMAINING CASES

The total number of infections in Singapore is now 61,689.

Of these, 61,183 people have fully recovered and been discharged, including 49 on Wednesday.

There are still 221 patients in hospitals. Of these, most are stable or improving, and five are in a critical condition.

Another 254 patients are isolated at community facilities. They have mild symptoms or are clinically well but still tested positive for Covid-19.

Thirty-one people have died from complications due to the disease.
