SingFirst will not contest Ang Mo Kio GRC

SINGAPORE — The Singaporeans First party said it will not contest Ang Mo Kio GRC in the coming General Election, and will leave the Reform Party to take on the People’s Action Party team there.
“To avoid a 3-corner fight, SingFirst will hereby withdraw its interest to contest AMK GRC and focus its resources on Tanjong Pagar and Jurong GRCs,” said Mr Tan Jee Say, the party’s Secretary-General, in a press statement today (Aug 10).
The Reform Party won 30.67 per cent of the votes in Ang Mo Kio in the 2011 General Election, and has indicated its intention to run in the same constituency this time around.
In a post on his Facebook page, RP Secretary-General Kenneth Jeyaretnam thanked SingFirst for "graciously deciding" not to contest Ang Mo Kio.
"We hope that we can now form an alliance with them, NSP, SDP, PPP, SPP and SDA in our common objective of taking at least a third of the seats in this election," he added.
The PAP’s Ang Mo Kio team is helmed by Mr Lee Hsien Loong; the Prime Minister has been an MP for the constituency since a walkover in the 1991 GE.
Ang Mo Kio was the last GRC where a three-corner fight was possible, after a meeting on Thursday attended by the various Opposition parties. The National Solidarity Party earlier today agreed that it would not contest Marine Parade GRC, which was eyed by the Workers’ Party. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
