SINGAPORE – SMRT will be introducing three new Wheelchair Accessible Bus (WAB) services — services 176, 188 and 990 — to its existing service routes from March 22.

This brings the total number of SMRT WAB services from 42 to 45.

Special features of these bus services include wheelchair accessible ramps, horizontal handrails and bell push buttons programmed with a chime that is different from the normal bell to notify the driver that the wheelchair-user wants to alight. SMRT bus captains of these services are also trained to provide assistance to wheelchair users when needed. They can operate the ramps on the WABs for boarding and alighting.

Meanwhile, SBS Transit runs 182 WAB services, whichs makes 89 per cent of its basic bus services wheelchair-accessible. Its entire bus fleet will be wheelchair-accessible by 2023.
