Suspect in hospital shooting incident faces 2 new charges

SINGAPORE — The suspected vehicle thief accused of snatching a police officer’s gun and firing three rounds at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital on June 21 was charged with two other offences today (June 29).

Muhammad Iskandar Sa’at, 23, now faces one count of voluntarily causing hurt and one count of escaping police custody on top of the initial charge of unlawful discharge of firearms, which carries the mandatory death penalty.

Today, the court allowed the prosecution’s application to remand Muhammad Iskandar for psychiatric assessment at Changi Prison Complex Medical Centre.

In the shooting incident earlier this month, Muhammad Iskandar is accused of hitting Staff Sergeant Mohammad Sadli Razli, the police officer watching over him, multiple times with a T-baton and a metal pole that is used for securing an intravenous drip, court documents show.

If convicted of this count of voluntarily causing hurt, he faces a jail term of up to seven years or a fine or caning or a combination of these punishments.

In addition, he is accused of attempting to escape from the custody of SSG Mohammad Sadli, which if proven is punishable with jail of up to 15 years.

Muhammad Iskandar is said to have attacked the officer while he was in a private medical examination room at the hospital. The suspect had been sent there after he complained of chest pains.

Muhammad Iskandar allegedly discharged three rounds from SSG Mohammad Sadli’s .38-inch calibre Taurus revolver with intent to cause physical injury. The oficer suffered gunshot wounds to his left thumb and right foot in the incident.

At his second court appearence today, Muhammad Iskandar’s request to be released on bail was denied by District Judge Eddy Tham. He will appear in court again on July 20.
