SINGAPORE: Teck Lee LRT station will begin service on Aug 15 - about 19 years after the station was built.
The opening of the station will improve transport connectivity for Punggol residents and make it easier for those commuting to the new Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) campus, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in a news release on Wednesday (Jul 31).
There will be covered linkways between Teck Lee LRT station, the business park within the upcoming Punggol Digital District and the SIT campus, it added.
SIT will move to the Punggol campus in phases from the second half of 2024, a SIT spokesperson told CNA previously. The school's academic year begins in September.
LTA has also procured 25 new two-car trains for the Sengkang-Punggol LRT, which will be delivered progressively from the end of this year, said Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat.
This will double the number of two-car trains in the fleet, increasing passenger capacity and ensuring that the line can meet long-term public transport demand.
Teck Lee station has been standing since the Punggol LRT system was opened in 2005. It is the only station on the LRT line that has yet to open.
The opening of Teck Lee Station and improvements to the Sengkang-Punggol LRT complement bus service 84G/W in enhancing connectivity to the northern part of Punggol, said LTA.
Service 84G/W has been in operation since Jun 23. The bi-directional circular service runs between Punggol Bus Interchange, Sentul Crescent, Punggol Way, New Punggol Road and Punggol Road.
LTA also announced that Punggol Coast MRT Station, located on the North-East Line extension, is "on track" to open by the end of the year.
"This will bring our MRT network closer to residents in Punggol North and make it even more convenient for commuters from other parts of our island to travel to the Punggol Digital District and SIT Punggol Campus," said Mr Chee.
