Tighter regulations on electric bikes to kick in next month

SINGAPORE — Starting next month, new power-assisted bicycles (PABs) must comply with European safety standards, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) today (Jan 27).
Those looking to buy PABs, or electric bikes, from next month should look for an orange seal, the LTA added. The transport authority said that PABs that have been approved under existing requirements and affixed with a blue seal will still be allowed for sale and use on public roads.
The LTA announced tighter rules for PABs last year. They included weight and power limits, as well as safety requirements for electric circuits and batteries.
The LTA said it will be imposing stricter penalties for those who sell and use non-compliant PABs.
“These measures are intended to improve safety for PAB users and for other road users, including pedestrians,” said the LTA.
