More than 500 people, many new citizens, celebrated Vishu, the Malayalee New Year, at the Sembawang Community Club yesterday. The Malayalees form the second-largest ethnic Indian group here after the Tamils.

The event featured the traditions of the Malayalees and a traditional Vishu vegetarian feast was also served. The celebrations were originally scheduled earlier this month, but were postponed to a month after the death of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, out of respect for the former Prime Minister.
