Fire razes 1,000 'stilt' homes in Malaysia's Sabah, thousands displaced
More than 9,000 people have been displaced after a fire tore through a coastal village in Malaysia’s Sabah state on Apr 19.
The blaze reportedly broke out at around 1.30am after a resident was unable to put out a fire from a gas stove while cooking.
At least 1,000 makeshift homes in Kampung Bahagia were razed, many built on stilts over water. No casualties were reported.
The village is home to some of Malaysia’s poorest residents, including indigenous and stateless communities.
