Adjournment motion on fire safety in homes

30:23 Min

There are three areas where Singapore can close important gaps to improve fire safety in homes - first, “barriers to egress” such as keyed gates; second, battery fires; and third, the “widening gap” in fire safety standards across older and newer HDB flats and estates. NCMP Andre Low elaborated on these when he moved an adjournment motion on the issue in parliament on Monday (Jan 12). Responding, Minister of State for Home Affairs Goh Pei Ming said evidence has shown that most fires stem from human behaviours and practices, not infrastructure. Designing every home as a ‘fire compartment’ to limit the spread of flames before help arrives has also been effective. And where necessary and feasible, older blocks of flats are upgraded to strike a balance between robust fire safety and practicality.
