Adjournment motion on rethinking redevelopment and green preservation

31:58 Min

Decisions on urban development and environmental preservation are not weighted equally in Singapore, said MP Dennis Tan in parliament on Wednesday (Jan 14). He said the current framework “has a structural tilt that forces the conclusion of ‘no choice’ too early in the process” and he suggested several revisions. In an adjournment motion, he cited the development of a bus depot in the middle of the Serangoon River forest. Responding, Minister of State for National Development Alvin Tan disagreed with Mr Dennis Tan’s assessment. He said the government takes a long-term and careful approach when planning the use of limited land to support Singaporeans' diverse needs. He added that more than 7,800 hectares of green spaces have been safeguarded in Singapore. Mr Alvin Tan also reiterated several points he had made previously about the rationale for the bus depot construction.
