Adjournment motion on supporting diverse aspirations through rental housing

Create a viable and expanded public housing rental scheme, offering options to meet a diverse range of needs - that was the call from MP Louis Chua, who moved an adjournment motion in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 2). He said current supply is extremely limited and subject to restrictive criteria. Mr Chua said new public rental options could serve various groups, including the increasing number of millennials who want their own space and people who might find it appropriate to rent rather than buy at different stages in their lives. He gave examples of young couples, as well as individuals who want financial freedom rather than to be tied to a large mortgage. He said this could also promote true inclusivity and banish the stigma of HDB rental housing. Responding, Senior Minister of State for National Development Sim Ann said what Mr Chua is suggesting represents a change in the nature of Singapore’s public housing policy that must be carefully considered for reasons of principle as well as practicality. She said rental options are highly subsidised and hence very targeted, with the aim of helping those households eventually attain the benefits of home ownership. *Audio issues inherent from source
