Alvin Tan on 80:20 fundraising rule for foreign charitable causes
The 80:20 fundraising rule under the Charities Act aims to ensure that donations from Singapore's public are used primarily to benefit locals and meet local needs. The intent of the rule remains relevant, said Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth Alvin Tan. Replying to an MP's questions in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 8), he said besides appeals in aid for immediate disaster or humanitarian relief to other countries, the Commissioner of Charities also waives this rule for certain private fundraising appeals. It also considers applications for waivers on a case-by-case basis.
