Amy Khor on need to use licensed carpooling operators
A shared journey involving friends or colleagues where typically no payment is required is considered a social carpooling trip. However, if the carpooling trip is amongst strangers, this must be done via licensed carpooling operators. The public should only book carpooling trips through licensed operators. Senior Minister of State for Transport Amy Khor highlighted this in a Parliamentary reply on Monday (Feb 27). She pointed out that illegal carpooling trips matched through platforms such as Telegram chat groups do not have safeguards in place, unlike those booked through licensed carpooling operators. She said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been taking enforcement action against drivers who provide illegal carpooling services. She added that LTA will continue to monitor and conduct enforcement checks.
