Budget 2021 debate: Jessica Tan on planned GST hike in light of COVID-19 pandemic

Foreigners living and working in Singapore, tourists and the top 20 per cent of resident households account for a majority of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) borne by households and individuals, based on past collections. During the debate on Budget 2021 in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 24), Deputy Speaker Jessica Tan asked how COVID-19’s impact on foreigner and tourist numbers might affect projected revenue from the impending GST hike and if other forms of taxes might then be considered to fund increased healthcare spending.
