Budget 2022 debate: Carrie Tan on mental health of carers

15:36 Min

A mentally healthy nation is a strong nation and those at the forefront of caregiving need better mental health care so that they, in turn, can care better, said MP Carrie Tan in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 2). She sought enhanced financial support for informal caregivers by adding tiers to the Home Caregiving Grant and implementing a “Carefare” scheme similar to Workfare, for lower-income individuals who have to care full-time for loved ones. She called for social services and healthcare to be adequately staffed, and for employees to be protected from work hazards ranging from burnout to harassment. Ms Tan also suggested that grassroots volunteers be trained as mental health “befrienders” in the community.
