Budget 2022 debate: Chong Kee Hiong on mitigating inflation and preventing profiteering

07:31 Min

The Government must keep a close eye on potential profiteering, with Singaporeans already feeling the impact of inflation even before the impending Goods and Services Tax hike, said MP Chong Kee Hiong. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Feb 28), he said a balance must be struck between the rates of wage growth and inflation. One major factor is ensuring that workers have opportunities to upskill. Mr Chong also sought assistance for elderly private property owners who will face higher property tax under Budget 2022. He said for many in this group, their properties are not investments but long-term homes.
