Budget 2022 debate: Dennis Tan on 'just' transition to green economy
Budget 2022 is a "step in the right direction" in many ways, even though the Workers' Party disagrees with the key proposal of the GST hike, said MP Dennis Tan. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 1), he said that while Budget 2022 can be said to be matching Singapore's climate ambitions to international standards, the "devil" is in the details. As Singapore will need to transition away from its current economic structure at some cost, he said he looks forward to more details on how the Government intends to achieve and manage a "just" transition, particularly within the petrochemical industry. Turning to the planned GST hike, he asked if the Government can assure Singaporeans that this will not mean that they are going to pay more in out-of-pocket healthcare costs.
