Budget 2022 debate: Edward Chia on building a resilient labour force
Singapore’s local workforce is expected to shrink as a consequence of the country’s ageing population and low birth rate. It will not only need to be complemented by foreign talent but also supplemented in the areas of essential and enabling services, said MP Edward Chia in Parliament on Monday (Feb 28). He said enabling services include childcare and infant care, which enable young parents to be economically active. Mr Chia called on the Government to review the current and projected manpower requirements in those sectors, vis-à-vis local workforce numbers. He also asked about opportunities for local businesses to be involved in infrastructure projects related to climate resilience.
