Budget 2022 debate: Hazel Poa on GST hike and cost of living concerns

12:47 Min

Progress Singapore Party welcomes the further tightening of foreign manpower and the increased focus on redistribution through higher income tax rates. However, it objects to the GST hike, said NCMP Hazel Poa in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 1). She said amid concerns of the rising cost of living, "this is a bad time" to raise the GST. Moreover, Singapore does not need the revenue for now. She urged the Government to look at other ways of raising revenue, such as increasing corporate and personal income taxes. She also stressed the need to cut expenditure, instead of just raising revenue to pay for it. She also proposed treating land sale proceeds as revenue over the period of the lease.
