Budget 2024 debate: Derrick Goh on ‘fitting first instalment’ for Forward Singapore goals
Budget 2024 is the first Budget that is dedicated towards the goals of Forward Singapore, where Singaporeans collectively shape the way forward, said MP Derrick Goh. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 27), he said although the world is more complex and uncertain, he is confident that Singapore can forge ahead with resilience and optimism. He highlighted the need to sustain fiscal and economic strength, as well as improve three key trends - accelerating local business growth in the new economy, thriving in the digital age and enhancing social resilience and empathy. Mr Goh stressed the need for Singapore to remain united, supported by discipline and foresight in the Government's fiscal policies. He noted that the Budget is generous and holistic, and said the projected balanced fiscal position signals continued prudence. Mr Goh said Singapore has always been able to navigate obstacles better than others to emerge stronger, thanks to good governance and financial strength accumulated from its reserves and the prudent use of the reserves. He said he is glad that Budget 2024 did not succumb to populist and unsustainable initiatives but is underpinned by fundamental principles, discipline and pragmatism. He described Budget 2024 as a “fitting first instalment” to realise the Forward Singapore goals of a shared future.
