Budget 2024 debate: Poh Li San on supporting seniors and their caregivers

10:22 Min

Beyond the addition of hardware in the form of senior-friendly facilities and amenities in housing estates, MP Poh Li San hopes funds from the Age Well SG initiative can be used to implement “heart-ware” programmes. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Feb 26), she touched on the topics of intergenerational preparation and safeguards towards degenerative ageing conditions such as dementia as well as programmes to increase social sustainability among the elderly. She proposed that the Ministry of Health (MOH) consider commissioning studies to look into how Singaporeans can prepare for the fight against dementia. She also noted that many caregivers living with people with dementia are likely to be psychologically impacted, adding that caregivers and community volunteers should be regularly monitored and constantly supported by social workers. Separately, she also asked that MOH consider integrating service boundaries across health and social services for greater synergy.
