Budget 2025 debate: Eric Chua on Singapore becoming a Blue Zone 3.0
Singaporeans have an average life expectancy of 84.3 years, with men having an average life span of 84 years while women live to an average of 88 years. But that does not mean that all is well. Senior Parliamentary Secretary Eric Chua said this in parliament on Wednesday (Feb 26). He indicated that Singapore’s classification as a Blue Zone 2.0, a marker of longevity, was achieved through “careful orchestration via policy and programming” rather than an organic development. He also noted the “significant 10-year gap” between Singaporeans’ healthspan - years lived in good health - at 74.2 years, compared to their lifespan. Highlighting the importance of non-healthcare and non-medical components such as social connections, physical activity, dietary habits, cognitive engagement, and employment to ageing well, he said: “As we strive towards being a Blue Zone 3.0, our goal is not just to live longer, but to live well."
