Budget 2025 debate: Lim Biow Chuan on sharing the benefits of economic growth with all Singaporeans

08:39 Min

Welcoming benefits provided to all Singaporeans in Budget 2025, such as SG60 and Climate Vouchers, MP Lim Biow Chuan said he hoped this marked a shift in the government’s financial policy to recognise everyone’s contributions to nation building, regardless of their housing type. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday (Feb 26), he highlighted continuing concerns about the cost of living, saying handouts do not address the issue itself. He called on the government to do more to help businesses keep labour, rental and borrowing costs down. Finally, while expressing appreciation for the new Large Families Scheme, Mr Lim added that the government must “go back to the drawing board” to ask why many couples are not even having children in the first place. “I personally think that Singaporeans lead too stressful a life”, he said.
