Budget debate 2024: Ng Ling Ling on helping working adults and young seniors

10:16 Min

Even as mid-career workers will soon get a S$4,000 top-up in SkillsFuture Credit to help them upskill and progress in their careers, the low take-up rate for the scheme so far is a concern, said MP Ng Ling Ling in Parliament on Monday (Feb 26). She asked that employers get more support to give their staff time off for training, and for subsidies to cover not just diploma courses but graduate and post-graduate degrees too. Ms Ng also said there are an increasing number of young seniors aged 55 and above who are still single and may have not paid off their HDB flats. She sought help for those affected by the transfer of CPF savings into their Retirement Account, which cannot be withdrawn to settle their housing needs. Finally, she suggested that more be done to alleviate the concerns of young couples who may be put off from having children due to the high cost of living in Singapore.
