Budget debate: MPs discuss rising cost of living and fiscal marksmanship

06:53 Min

On the second day of the Budget debate, MPs called for the government to look at structural issues contributing to the rising cost of living. Several opposition MPs suggested that reliance on rebates and vouchers could mean that even basic necessities are getting out of reach. They also questioned whether giving out vouchers and handouts is a sustainable solution. Opposition MPs also questioned the discrepancy between the Budget surplus of S$6.4-billion and the initial projection of S$0.78 billion. Other MPs, however, spoke in support of the government's moves. They emphasised the importance of prudent fiscal management and safeguarding the surpluses for uncertainties ahead.
